Daniela Latorre

Daniela Latorre

Milan, Italy

Dr. Daniela Latorre is an immunologist and Associate Professor at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan. She earned her PhD in Immunology from the “Sapienza” University of Rome and completed her postdoctoral training in Prof. Federica Sallusto’s lab, first at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Bellinzona, then at ETH Zurich.

During her time in Switzerland, she received several competitive grants, including the prestigious PRIMA Starting Grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation, which enabled her to establish and lead the Human Neuroimmunology group at ETH Zurich starting in 2020.

In 2025, Dr. Latorre returned to Italy to head the Neuro-Immune Interactions Unit at San Raffaele Hospital, supported by major national and international grants such as the Armenise Harvard Career Development Award, the ERC Consolidator Grant, and the Italian Consolidator Grant.

Her research primarily focuses on human immunology, with a main interest in T cell immunity in the context of immune-mediated neurological diseases and microbial infections. Her postdoctoral work provided the first solid evidence of the autoimmune basis of narcolepsy, a sleep related disorder of the brain (Nature, 2018), and a more recent study from her group shed light on Guillain- Barré syndrome (Nature, 2024), offering new important insights into the disease immune mechanisms and paving the way for the potential development of more targeted and effective therapies.

Dr. Latorre has received several honors, including the prestigious Pfizer Research Prize (2020), the EU-NN Young Scientist Award (2019), and the AIN Award for Best International Young Researcher on Narcolepsy (2018). In addition, she is highly engaged in serving as a guest panelist at career workshops, a mentor in various postdoctoral mentorship programs, and a contributor to science outreach activities.
